Just how close did we come to total annihilation during the Cold War?
I remember the Cuban missile crisis was One Time when we came close to trading missiles, were there any others?
Also, do you think people under 20 today appreciate (or even know) how dangerous the situation was?
TOTAL annihilation? In retrospect, not that close. Yes: the Cuban Missile Crisis was maybe as close as we got to a nuclear exchange, but the fact that we didn't (due to the cooler heads prevailing on both sides) suggests to me that even if we'd gone one round of missile trading, the results would have come short of total annihilation because the cooler heads would have been so appalled that they'd have stopped it. One thing you have to say for the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction: it sort of worked. That's also why I think things are vastly more dangerous today: the nuclear powers of the Cold War had everything to lose and nothing to gain by going nuclear. The small nations of today who are developing (or have) nuclear weapons seem to me both more ideologically driven and have perhaps more to gain than to lose. Seems far more likely to me that there'll be a future nuclear exchange in the Mideast than was ever likely in the 1950s-60s.
Oh, and no: people under 20 don't really know how the situation felt at the human level (people building bomb shelters in their back yards, children practicing ducking under their desks as if that would save them from an atomic blast)--because they don't live in a world divided between two major powers who were not only ideologically opposed and territorially competitive but almost equally matched in strength. They live in a one-superpower world, with dangerous opponents but no one enemy with monolithic destructive power. At the same time, though, that's the Achilles heel: if North Korea or Iran successfully explodes a nuke, and then launches an ICBM, or Al-Qaeda detonates a dirty bomb somewhere, they'll get the idea real fast...
